New tune on Myspace

My latest work “Thing-Kinda-Thing” is up on http://www.myspace.com/zerobalance if you’re bored.

So,…
I cried while writing this song.
True story.
It happened last Wednesday while writing the lead guitar solo. (at the end, during the song’s fade-out.)
I’m not talking about Waa Boo Hoo bawlin’ here. But I DID shed a tear in my right eye.
It’s the equivelant of watching your children on the playground and suddenly it hits you…”Wow, those are my beautiful kids (notes) right there on the swings. They came from ME!”
Although it’s the first time it’s happened during one of my OWN songs, it’s not the first time it’s happened at all.

One particular moment it occurs is during a melody from the movie The Good The Bad and The Ugly. It’s when the “Ugly” fellow first stumbles upon the graveyard.
It’s called “Ecstacy of Gold” by film composer Ennio Morricone, if anyone wants to check it out.
Anyway, there is something about certain rare songs, the way the notes fit JUST right, that turns me into an emotional little girl inside.

So my question is:

Does this happen to anyone else? With music or any other artform?
I don’t understand the reason for the feeling.
It’s pretty pointless…

  1. I think a lot of people get choked up over music or art, but I am not one of them. I’m also not a great artist, so maybe there’s a connection. I do get excited and pumped up, or wowed, depending on the piece. And back in the day I used to play certain albums when I was depressed, to just *wallow* in the depression (Life of Agony comes to mind). I think music affects just about everyone, sometimes even negatively. It’s interesting, I find I hate a lot less music than I did back in college. I’m a lot more open minded these days, and appreciate more complex stuff. I don’t think I’ll ever be as hardcore into music as I was in college, but that probably has a lot to do with finding your identity, and looking for something to associate yourself with. I read something about that recently, explaining why myspace is so huge with teenagers. They’re exploring their identities bigtime, and their using their customized profile and band associations to create that identity. Interesting stuff. And way off topic, so I’ll stop now.

  2. Oh yeah, great song, by the way. I knew exactly what you were talking about (fade out guitar riff) as soon as I heard it. Very cool.

  3. Great work, ZB!! I definitely was feeling the rhythm guitar and I like old school hip-hop style drums with it. I’ve always liked that kind of merger. The only thing more that I wanted from that song was a moment where the high end guitar or chimes rang over just the beat. Just a moment of clarity and then bring it right back in. That would add some more energy to it. But I’m amazed at how you even get those guitar sounds to tweak so close to a real guitar. And as far as getting choked up over music, it happens all the time. There’s a ton of songs I have trouble singing along to because I get choked up. And don’t even get me started on goose bumps! 😀 But if you’re really serious about music, it’s easy to get emotionally caught up in the writing process.

  4. I know exactly what you mean about simplifying to little more than drums.
I guess I didn’t think of it because I’ve used that technique so many times before, that I don’t want to be predictable. (If I had a dime for every time I threw in a guitar solo at about 2 minutes into a song…)

Thanks for the input. Next time, I’ll put that drum part in for ya!
